Youth Development Program

The Verulam Cycling Club youth development programme is gaining momentum.  We now have different activities designed to introduce under 18s to road cycling, racing and develop their skills to prepare them for competition for those that wish to try racing. These sessions provide the necessary cycling knowledge and skills for youths to progress to riding safely and efficiently in the regular Verulam Cycling Club adult club runs and activities.

Check the Facebook Youth Development Page and Twitter Feed for the latest information on coaching sessions.

Track Sessions

track coachingOur coaching/racing sessions are held at Welwyn Track (Gosling Park Stadium, Stanborough Road, Welwyn Garden City, AL8 6XE). These take place on Saturday afternoons, usually starting at 14:00 in the summer and 12:00 in the winter, although times may change depending on other events on particular dates. All sessions are run by our qualified British Cycling coaches, who are members of Verulam Cycling Club. Our training sessions are well planned, being prepared and designed in accordance with British Cycling coaching guidelines. More importantly these sessions are designed to be fun and enjoyable! Our Track Sessions include:

  • Under 12s learning bike skills using British Cycling coaching gears 1-4. Basic requirements are that riders must be able to confidently ride a bike e.g. successfully completed primary school cycle proficiency course. Experience riding for 1-2 hours on a single bike ride is also helpful but not essential
  • 9-12 years old learning advanced skills and introduction to track cycling and track specific skills using British Cycling coaching gears 1-6
  • 12-18 years old learning advanced track skills and track cycling using British Cycling coaching gears 5-6.

Kids need to bring their own bike (preferably a road bike), helmet and gloves. Each session is £5 to cover the cost of hiring the velodrome. Please contact davinder@gmail.com if you are interested.

Cyclocross Sessions

IMG 5239smallDuring the Autumn/Winter months, and on alternate Saturdays when we are not at the Welwyn Track, we run cyclocross training sessions at Marlborough Club (Old Oak off Cottonmill Lane, AL1 2EF) St. Albans. Using elements of both the BMX circuit and a carefully laid-out cyclocross course, we teach our youths how to mount and dismount quickly and safely on the flat, then move onto core cornering techniques, mounting and dismounting on uphill/downhill sections, practice riding close to each other in a group, and show them how to improve off road cornering whilst climbing and descending. We then progress onto cyclocross specific skills; these sessions include:

  • Teaching skills in maintaining speed throughout a Cyclocross course
  • How to approach and negotiate steep ascents - dismounting/running/remounting or power pedalling
  • How to negotiate steep descents quickly and safely
  • Cyclocross overtaking techniques.

Our overall aim is for our youths to perform well at cyclocross races, and have great fun practicing these skills. Please note the these sessions are not suitable for road-bikes - riders should bring either mountain bikes or cyclocross bikes.

Sunday Morning Club Runs

Road cropVerulam Cycling Club's youth-specific Sunday Club Runs cover 25-35 miles in about 2 to 3hrs. Basic requirements are that riders must be self-sufficient on the roads (typically age 12+), have a proper road bike, suitable clothing, a helmet and adequate fitness for a 25-35 mile ride. Our routine is for departure from St Albans at 9:00am with a coffee stop at 10.15am and to be back by about midday. We have a quality club road bike that can be arranged in advance for hire at £5 for the day.

All riders on Sunday morning rides must be Verulam Cycling Club members and have British Cycling membership/third party insurance. Please contact davinder@gmail.com if you are interested.
