Long Term Track Bike Hire
We have a new process to avoid wasting time to have a track bike on a long term loan:1) Please ask Doug or me first if you want a long term hire.2) Need to arrange a bike fit on Saturday afternoon at one of our track sessions, so you know what bike you need. We can then check if a bike is available.3) Doug or Davinder will notify Graham at St. Albans cycles what bike and who is collecting, and then you would arrange a suitable collection time. Graham will not give anyone a bike unless they have heard from Doug or Davinder.4) Inform Doug or Davinder how long you want the bike for and arrange long term hire payment (same as previous year). Best approach is a monthly direct debit into Verulam CC bank account./5) Inform Doug or Davinder you have taken the bike and the number on the white label.

Sunday 9th June 9.00am - 12.00pm - Youth Road Ride

Due to the nature of the Intros group being a transition group only and the different abilities VCC have decided that Youths should not ride with this group. They should go in the Youth group or chaperoned in Inters groups or higher. Please contact Doug or Davinder if you have any questions.

Youth group ride this Sunday - destination is Frithsden Vineyard. We will also have chaperones for the adult groups. Please could you let me know if you are interested in going by confirming on Teamer or sending me an email. We need to organise Chaperones for the appropriate groups. We now have chaperones for the adult groups and the Sunday Youth group. Using Teamer we can ensure chaperones are available for youths who want to ride in the adult groups. Please make you are on the Sunday ride teamer group - contact me for more details.
Please ensure you walk with your bike to/from the road. Alban Arena is here. Please arrive by 8.50am for departure at 9.00am. Don’t be late as runs don’t wait!1) The routine is for departure at 9,00am with a coffee stop at 10.15am and to be back by midday.2) Basic requirements - riders must be self-sufficient on the roads (typcally age 12+) have a proper road bike, suitable kit, a helmet and adequate fitness for a 25-30 mile ride averaging 15 mph.3) All riders must be VCC members and have British Cycling membership/third party insurance. VCC Club membership: We need a record of the riders for emergency contact details etc.4) If this is your first Sunday group ride please arrive at 8:40am we will give you a crash course on riding etiquette and group riding safety.5) Please also note that we have a mudguard policy over the winter. We won't turn you away if you haven't got this sorted, but we ask for riders to have the rear wheel covered to avoid spraying all of the riders behind. There are plenty of options out there (Race Guard and Crud2). Shout if you need advice. PLEASE SEE our new MUDGUARDS web site - https://www.verulamcc.org.uk/club-runs-a-activities/club-runs/mudguards
Please confirm your attendance to either by responding to this email or teamer. If you have any questions please let me know.Talent Development Sessions - Summer 2019

Youths on VCC Sunday Rides

As many of you are aware, we are keen to encourage progression through our Sunday riding groups for all and as part of this we’ve been exploring how we can support the development of some of our more capable youth riders.

We continue to have a dedicated Sunday Youth Group ride, with an average pace of 14 mph. This group will ride independently most weekends led by Dave Yorke, Davinder Bhatia, Doug Driscoll or Mark Smith.
In addition, we have introduced youth riding in the adult groups. These youth riders will always ride with a club approved ‘chaperone’. The chaperone will be a trained runs leader, additional to the group’s run leader on the day, who has completed an additional induction for this role and been DBS checked*. In short this will mean that if there is no chaperone available the youth riders cannot ride with an adult group.
Only Youth (Road) members will be eligible to ride with an adult group. This is an up-grade to the current Youth membership which already incorporates a requirement for a signed Parental Consent form. To achieve this up-grade requires approval from a Club Coach and the completion of an additional parental consent addendum form, signed by the parent/guardian. This addresses two key points.

  1. That our club coaches have assessed the ability and competency of the rider for this type of riding;
  2. That the parent/guardian has acknowledged the risks associated with this type of riding for their child and accepted the chaperone will be acting as their proxy, purely as a responsible adult.

We operate this under our published polices, see here which includes a number of new documents that are relevant to this, along with a new Under 18s - Road Rider Policy
We also be using both a general risk assessment, written to reflect the nature of our Club runs, acknowledging that our rides have a set structure, a set average pace for the group, a runs leader, a ‘half-way’ café stop, use the open roads, are ridden to our riding rules and use a dynamic risk assessment operated by the chaperones.*What is a DBS check?
DBS refers to the agency created out of a merger between the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and The Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA), its full title is The Disclosure and Barring Service. The DBS enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that involving children or vulnerable adults, and provides wider access to criminal record information through its disclosure service for England and Wales. The DBS check is a simple, free process, facilitated for us by British Cycling, requiring the completion of a short questionnaire and its submission to BC.

Teamer App
Now this is really important! We use Teamer to gauge how many kids will attend a session and ensure we have enough coaches on the day. For the track bikes this has become even more important as we really need to know how many track bikes we need to bring along.
If you have not done so already PLEASE register with Teamer and join the VCCYouth Development Team!!!
Please let me know if you are not invited and not seen any details or having technical difficulties. See - http://tinyurl.com/zteqyq9
and the new Teamer app showing we have a lot of kids interested for Saturday.
Interested in helping our Youth Development Program?
With increasing numbers of children attending, we are always on the lookout for volunteers who can help out with Saturday coaching or the Sunday Youth road ride. Please contact Doug or me if you are interested in helping.
