20-Nov-14: Colin Hodges sent in this snap from dinner with some Spanish bloke he met last night...

4-Nov-14: The VCC goes global! Andrew Ackrill was out riding in Northern California (as one does) last weekend: "I just started descending a small road when I saw what looked like a Verulam jersey coming up the road (I had my VCC gilet on). It was Craig Stewart out riding with his son (on a visit) and it was his jersey I saw.". How's that for a coincidence!

28-Oct-14: Andy Digby took an excellent 4th place at Hillingdon on Saturday after forcing a leading break of 5 riders. Seen below launching an early solo move. Congratulations Andy!

27-Oct-14: A VCC team of Nick Coe, Mark Antcliffe, Paul King and Colin Hodges completed the Arbis/Cog Team Time Trial yesterday, finishing mid table with a good time despite an incident packed event and losing two of four riders. 27-Oct-14: Stefan Zakorchemny was one of the top finishers at the Wiggle 'Circuit Breaker' Sportive on Sunday on his shiny new steel winter bike. Who was it that said "It's not about the bike"?

Christine Pout is now confirmed as our the Ladies winner. Results... Seabird Table...

23-Sep-14: Paul Cackett looks sure to be our Road Man of The Year after taking a fantastic runner-up spot in the season long MSTINA Series. Congratulations Paul. Time for a well earned rest! Matt Pumo and Nick Coe also completed the series, coming 8th and 6th respectively, in their categories.

21-Sep-14: 40 riders enjoyed our first ever Team Pursuit today, and a fantastic (and safe) time was had by all on a glorious day. Some very close times on handicap, and lots of friendly competition. A number of teams ended up together on the road, which was interesting and results reflected the mix of teams overall. A very tough course with some quick times, with some good team riding and camaraderie. Think we will do again for sure!

Big thanks to Nick & Kim Coe for a superbly organised event which wasn't easy to pull together.  Thank you to all the marshals and timekeepers (who certainly had a tough job!), thank you to Rock&Road for the generous prize vouchers and thank you to Emily's Tea Shop for hosting our HQ! Results...

16-Aug-14: 11 riders turned out for the VCC Mountain Bike ride out of Ware. A steady spin through beautiful countryside, interspersed with a few punchy climbs, river crossings and views right down to central London. The weather was almost perfect and the trails largely dry, making for an idyllic ride. East of Ware there are so many good bridleways and byways that we were able to complete the vast majority of the route off-road and traffic-free - a rare luxury in Herts! A big 'thank you' to Andrew Rice for organising.

14-Aug-14: We had an amazing number of finishers (40+) at the Pru London Sportive on Sunday - in what can best be described as 'Biblical conditions'. Tom Tichler summed it up rather well by describing it "like going through a car wash … for about 3 hours". Congratulations guys. Steve Maxted was top (and wet) dog with an impressive 3hr 43mins. Full results... Photo courtesy of Graham Ricketts:

14-Aug-14: Paul Cackett very nearly became a National Champion at the LVRC National Road Race. He took off from the start and had a lead of 2 minutes before being reeled in by a group of 5 on the last lap, but still managed 6th across the line. A great effort Paul! Report...

Congratulations Paul. I hope you had your arms raised high!

15-Jul-14: Graham Ricketts, Kate Gannon and Tom Jennings rode the crazy Dunwich Dynamo event at the weekend; 120 miles from London to the Suffolk coast ... at night! Quote from Graham:  "Quite an experience. Rather (actually very) wet and after two punctures with about 30 miles to go and no more spare tubes I spent the next couple of hours crossing fingers and praying (fortunately no more punctures). Quite an event with just a trail of red lights to show you the way". Quote from Kate: "...old ladies with dressing gowns waving us through villages at 3am"

15-Jul-14: We co-ran (with TMG Horizon) the LVRC TOACHIM /MSTINA circuit race series at Hog Hill on Sunday. 30-Jun-14: Keith Loveman completed the BikeBath 'Gladiator Challenge'; two 100 mile sportives around the Mendips. "It sounded like a good idea to 'celebrate' turning 50. Thunderstorms and an encounter with a bramble hedge added to the challenge, as did getting up at 5.30am on the Sunday to do it all again. Some fantastic scenery with rolling hills and a few long tough climbs including Cheddar Gorge where even the Garmin 'auto paused' thinking I was no longer moving! Officially now on the Gladiator roll of honour, but a long way from 'Spartacus' ".

Congratulations Paul. You might find the hills a bit steeper at the Marmotte though ;-)

21-Jun-14: National 24 hour: 2nd claim member Jonathan Shubert capped his round-the-world cycle epic with an emphatic win at the National 24 hour time trial championships. We each missed the gold standard by about 20 minutes, despite taking a wrong turn towards the end and reducing the 100 miles to 97 !. Definitely one to do again next year."

3-Sep-2013: Paul Wilson competed in this year's Haute Route Alps sportive from Geneva to Nice in August, climbing 21,000m over seven stages. "Finished 2nd non-professional woman (6th woman including the pros, 129th overall, including all pro and non-pro men, out of a total of approx 1500 starters) and 2nd in my Age Group, in a time of 10:57:07. In so doing, I qualified for the 2013 World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, on October 12th. I am so excited - and also still very stiff!!". Fantastic achievement Elaine! Wish you all the best in Hawaii...

6-Aug-2013: Troy Backhouse is our latest member to complete the London 2 Paris challenge this year. "4 great days with temps up to 40C". Congratulations Troy! Seems I'll have to put this one on my bucket list :/

5-Aug-2013: Shu Pillinger completed the 40k Prologue from Buckingham Palace and 1420k "once in 4 years" London to Edinburgh to London (LEL) Audax event yesterday. "Got to Edinburgh in 47 hours and then hit the headwind for the return leg. Battled hypothermia descending off the North Pennines in the dark, having been drenched during the day. And in complete contrast, I then fried despite mandatory ice cream stops. Final time around 105 hours. A superbly organised event and a great learning experience for Race Around Ireland coming up in September". Congratulations Shu and good luck in Ireland!

1-Aug-2013: Craig Sears-Black has provided us with some pretty good reports on some pretty crazy adventures over the last year, and he never fails to disappoint. This time it is the Dunwich Dynamo: 120 miles from London to the East-Coast - at night! Report...

1-Aug-2013: Nearly forgot to mention that Miles Allen and I rode the South Downs Way Challenge last week. Yet another 100-miler, but this time off-road! We had a nice breeze to keep us cool, but unfortunately it was head-on all the way :( We were broken men by the finish. 13,000ft of climbing, 10hrs in the saddle over some pretty bumpy terrain. Can't wait till next year :)

1-Aug-2013: Evening 10: Results... (see page 14), Seabird Standings

22-Jul-2013: Open 25: We had a great event today, 90 entries, including 18 Verulam riders, many of whom were doing their first 25. Well done to all participants. Mike Jubb was our fastest rider, and John Jones looks a likely candidate for our novice 25 trophy). Big thanks to all helpers and marshals for making the event a success and getting up so early! Results... Prize Winners... VCC Rider Times...

22-Jul-2013: Paul Wilson was back 'oop north' this weekend for the Wiggle Peak District Punisher sportive. Paul missed gold by five minutes, finishing 28th of 134 finishers. A tough gold standard!

Results... (see page 12), Seabird Standings

11-Jul-2013: Four VCC members (Andrew Cole, Mark Russell, Bob Bone and Andrew Ackrill) recently completed a coast-to-coast with a difference, riding the 802 miles between St Malo and Nice in 8 days as part of a 12-man peleton. Total ascent came to just under 15,500 metres, a total helped by Mont Ventoux

Our thanks to Don Andrews and John Miller for invaluable routing advice. Coincidentally we bumped into the Raid Alps guys at Nice airport as had same homeward flight booked!

10-Jul-2013: Evening 10: Lots of fun was had at our 2-up TT with Nick Coe and Gavin Bench taking the honours on the night. Results... (see page 11), Seabird Standings

9-Jul-2013: Graham Ricketts completed a London to Paris ride on Saturday

"I’m in this shot somewhere. Weather was rather cooler and wetter than in the UK and would disagree with comments that the first day was the hardest, cycling over the Somme in drizzle and consistent side/headwinds was pretty knackering !, I did it in support of The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted and have raised about £2450". Please give generously at www.virginmoneygiving.com/grahamricketts

9-Jul-2013: Stephanie Wheatley finished the Etape du Tour in 6.45 and came 156th out of 2,000 women. Great result Stephanie!!

8-Jul-2013: New member Paul Wilson completed two Sportives recently. The first was the Peak Endurance Fuel Sportive on 23rd June in the Peak District into strong winds and heavy rain for all but the last 40km. The stunning and grueling ride involved cycling 103miles, climbing over 13,500ft, and Paul achieved the silver standard, ending with the 16th fastest time of 86 finishers, with almost half of entrants dropping out. A week later Paul completed Wiggle's "The Long One" sportive, 125 miles from Fontwell Racecourse near Chichester. In idyllic conditions, Paul achieved the gold standard this time and enjoyed a much drier drive home

3-Jul-2013: Stefan Zakorchemney with some bloke he met on London-Paris 2013:

3-Jul-2013: Graham Ricketts rode a Sportive last week through work, sponsored by Segro, over parts of the Olympic course, starting and finishing at Rosslyn FC and taking in Box Hill.  It should have been 73 miles, but I took a wrong turn at Leatherhead and did 77 !, I also missed the feed station at the top of Box Hill (lord knows how) so did the whole thing non-stop on 3 cereal bars !! . Great weather and what a super smooth road surface on Box Hill, there’s a surprise !

19-Jun-2013: Gavin Bench has made a successful transition from our Seabird Trophy to Crit racing this year. An excellent bronze medal in category at the LVRC Region 7 Crit Champs followed by a 2nd in category at the Milton Keynes Bowl Crits. What's next Gavin?

19-Jun-2013: Alan Swain has just got back from two full days of cycling in Italy.  The highlight was a route that took in the main climbs of the penultimate stage of this years Giro, the one that finished with the climb to Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites.  Last 4 ks are all over 10%!  Snow now gone temperatures now in the 30's

18-Jun-2013: Evening 10: Best conditions of the season so far saw a number of PBs and close times (28 riders). Andy Digby was again quickest on the night, and was good to see some more ladies and juniors competing. Unfortunately, despite our recent briefing on the topic, we have had to disqualify 5 riders for crossing the white lines at finish turn, so can we all please remember this in future. Note: Next weeks results will be a bit late, as Nick is collecting cols in Spain. Results... (see page 8), Seabird Standings

11-Jun-2013: Evening 10: 22 riders joined in our first Athletes 10 last night, just riding their normal bikes. Some were also sporting some classic retro jerseys! A tough wind on return leg also made for slower times, but with very close racing within small groupings. Winner on the night was John Jones, riding the same road bike as usual, showing what can be done with practice, and not spending loads of cash on fancy equipment! Results... (see page 7), Seabird Standings

11-Jun-2013: Several of us were blessed with glorious weather out at The Dragon this weekend. 132 miles, 3350m climbing, 4,000 riders. Has to be the UK's nbr 2 sportive - after the C100 that is! I got some chain suck and lost my front mech. Rode the last 115 miles on the 34 ring. Great cadence training :)

11-Jun-2013: Please note that Steve Clarke is now at home. Visitors are welcome, but please arrange through This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

5-Jun-2013: Verulam CC rider times for the Chiltern 100 (over 60 of us on the day!) can be found here (separate worksheets for Gran/Medio/Corto). A great ride by Steve Kay ... right up there with the top boys!

2-Jun-2013: Chiltern 100 Sportive. What a day! Has to be one of the top 3 Sportives in the country. Eddie Spriggs, Lucy Cuppleditch, James O'Neill and Peter Tarry and the many many helpers over the last 2 weeks have done the club proud. 1,400 riders and goodness knows how many bananas! They even fixed the weather for us :) A big thank you to everybody for making this event such a great success...

29-May-2013: Miles Allen completed the epic 3-day Tour of Wessex. "Great weather and a well organised sportive. Highly recommended". Chapeau Miles!

29-May-2013: Evening 10: Not bad conditions considering the earlier rain, but only 9 hardy riders. Nick Coe on top yet again! Is he allowed to ride and run the events? Results... (see page 5), Seabird Standings

29-May-2013: Paul Cackett took 3rd place at the Milton Keynes Bowl last night after getting away with a break of 4. That elusive win can't be far away Paul!

24-May-2013: Latest update on Steve Clarke...

22-May-2013: Evening 10 results are in: 25 riders in decent conditions again (after last weeks cancellation), albeit a headwind on outward leg. Nick Coe was quickest this week, now heading the mens leader-board, with Paul Williams 2nd Verulam, thus making a one-two for Rock&Road staffers! Results... (see page 4), Seabird Standings

20-May-2013: Mark Antcliffe, Nick Coe, Paul Moody and I had a long journey up to the North Yorkshire Dales for the Etape Dales on Sunday. No wind, no rain and 17c at the finish! Unheard of :-o We all came in under the magic 7hr barrier hence went home proud owners of Gold certificates

20-May-2013: Paul Cackett got a 4th place in category at the LVRC road race at Hog Hill last week. "Break went from the off before l had even got my feet clipped in!". C'est la vie :)

13-May-2013: Latest update on Steve Clarke, courtesy of Neil Wass

9-May-2013: A record turnout (32 riders!) for our first Evening 10 in sunny and dry conditions; A marked contrast to the floods of this event last season. 6-May-2013: We all had a great time at the Hog Hill Experience Day. 22 riders signed up and we spent 2 hours focused on coaching - from basic skills (braking, cornering etc.) to tight group riding. Then an hour of fun races. Many thanks to Kim Coe, Dick Morgan, David Yorke and Innis Yorke (club commentator - at 9!) for coming out to help. Report...

Report...

28-Apr-2013: Shu Pillinger completed the Mallorca 312 (k that is) yesterday - a loop of the island in just over 13 hours (12:38 cycling time). "Weather conditions: the usual for me - non-stop rain and wind. I'm beginning to take it personally - one day I hope to have an event in sunshine! A scan of the results seems to show three faster women, so I'll happily settle for a 4th place." Congratulations Shu!

28-Apr-2013: Saturday 10-mile TT: A great turnout of 20 riders, in very cold and windy/showery conditions. Apologies, but we had problems with timings, so some data missing, and times subject to confirmation. Results... (see page 2) Seabird Standings

25-Apr-2013: Verulam CC was out in force this weekend with a strong field of riders racing in the first MSTina race of the year – the Ciclisti Vecchi RR on a hilly course in Herriard. Paul Caton (first claim TMG Horizon), Gavin Bench, Nick Coe and Paul Cackett were on in the C/D race early in the morning. 24-Apr-2013: The Verulam CC has safely (well almost) returned from their week in Majorca. We were blessed with a stunning week of sunshine and quality riding with 3-4 groups out every day (43 of us in all!). A very popular adventure which is sure to be repeated next year. Report to come. Photos...

8-Apr-2013: I too was in action in "The Joker" Sportive down between Salisbury & Shaftesbury. Plenty of 20% brutes to climb, including the 25% cobbled climb of Gold Hill - as used in the Hovis advert. Joy :)

2-Apr-2013: Graham Ricketts rode the London Phoenix Easter Classic yesterday. Quote: "Not a bad run out today, dry and bright (ish), although the organisers failed in their guarantee of a tailwind, seemed like head/cross winds pretty much the whole way round !. Good turnout though and great cakes at the food stop, although I was hoping for more than a single Cadbury’s Creme egg at the end!" http://connect.garmin.com/activity/291788027

1-Apr-2013: Good to see that we had 13 riders down for the Welwyn Wheelers Hilly TT. Nick Coe has summed up our results...

31-Mar-2013: Paul Cackett, Paul Caton, Paul Moody (the 3 Pauls!) and me (Doug) rode the Ronde Van Vlaanderen (aka Tour of Flanders) cyclo on Saturday. A nightmare journey down on Friday with the traffic & Eurotunnel, but it was all worth it. A dry day in biting cold conditions and a late start because some Muppet forgot their shoes! Fortunately a shop opened at 8:30 (start was at 7) and it was incident free from there on. Chips & mayo at the finish were as good as ever :)

25-Mar-2013: I had 7 hardy souls out mountain biking with me yesterday. Sub-zero all day and our 2-hour ride ended up taking 4-hours! Slush & mud; Horrid conditions :( Also saw Matt Pumo out with the racers (8 of them?) at the half way point. They looked as exhausted as we were :/

18-Mar-2013: Shu Pillinger completed the Wiggle No Excuses Sportive in the Gold standard on Saturday, recording the second fastest ladies' time for the second year running. The Epic distance was cancelled by the organisers because of the weather, so thankfully they only had to battle the wind and drizzle for 40 miles! A great start to the season. Congratulations Shu

13-Mar-2013: Dave Atherton took the honors at our Bike de Elegance evening on Monday with his trusty steel James Fothergill track bike (1958). This bike 'has some history' (see the last club mag) having being stolen and then rediscovered nearly 40 years later at a tip! Nick Coe was a close 2nd with his flashy new Trek Madone with the very latest 11-speed Dura Ace Di2 kit. Many thanks to all that made the effort to bring their precious pride & joys along!

12-Mar-2013: Victoria Williams surprised everybody with a win (!) on her first weekend of road racing at the Mid-Shropshire Wheelers Circuit Race plus a fine 8th place on Saturday in the Wolverhampton Wheelers Circuit Race. Both of them were at the Sundorne Circuit in Shrewsbury. Congratulations Victoria!

12-Mar-2013: Mark Antcliffe, Hazel Davies and Andrew Rice braved the conditions on Sunday to ride the Puncheur Sportive - around Ditchling Beacon and the Ashdown Forest. Mark clocked an excellent 3hrs 45' and was one of the top riders on the day. Andy managed to break his gear cable just before the climb up to the Beacon. Some ingenious bodging saved the day though!

6-Mar-2013: Congratulations to the 20 or so riders who completed the Harp Hilly Hundred on Sunday, winning VCC the trophy for another year. A good ride in reasonable conditions for a change, despite some bad road surfaces. At least there was no ice like we had on the Luton event the previous week.

28-Feb-2013: Hazel Davies and Andrew Rice were in action at the Hell of the Ashdown on Sunday. A bitter cold day meant cold tootsies and a hell of a day! Evidently nice hot cuppas at the refreshment stops helped get them through though :)

26-Feb-2013: Good fun was had by all at the Roller Competition last night. Gavin Bench eventually came through with the honors despite a flying start from Mr Samuel Skuce. Many thanks to Tony Brazier for pulling everything together!

6-Feb-2013: A quick thank you to Lucy Cuppleditch for a thoroughly entertaining account of her ride from Land's End to John O'Groats at the club room. Some 40 people came along to see what is clearly a subject of interest to many. Photos...

23-Jan-2013: The Wednesday "shirkers" out having fun. Spot the new member!

20-Jan-2013: Snow snow snow! This didn't put some of us hardy souls off though. Around 20 turned up for my MTB ride today. Veeery slippery out there. Several falls, but nothing too serious thank goodness. Photo courtesy of Andy Rice ...

14-Jan-2013: No club run on Sunday :( but this did at least give many of us an excuse to go out for some fun on our mountain bikes. Around 16 in my group and maybe 10 with Matt Pumo - travelling on the same route but in reverse. There were a few gloopy sections that caused a few embarrassing moments for some :) but it was all rideable. You should give it a try sometime!

10-Jan-2013: We had a full house at the club room on Monday to enjoy the mince pies and mulled wine put on by Dave & Val Korson. Thank you both. We definitely do need a bigger club room!

16-Dec-2011: Pics from Afan now in courtesy of Andy Rice

13-Dec-2011: Read all about it! Richard Marriott has put together a great article (1.2MB) summing up our experience at Afan Forest last weekend.

31-Oct-2011: Congratulations to 2nd claim rider Luke Clarke on a stunning ride at the National Hill Climb Championship. 13th place, just ahead of Olympic medallist Rob Hayles - and many other top pros. Jon Schubert also did a great ride coming in 26th - well in the mix!

7-Oct-2011: Our new cyclo-cross star Conrad Wild kicked off the season at the weekend at the Central Cyclo-Cross League - in the scorching sunshine. Aren't these events supposed to be mud baths? 37th out of 61 finishers. Good luck for the rest of the season Conrad!

2-Oct-2011: Sunday’s Hill Climb was enjoyed by 25 riders (including a number of first timers) on another sunny and warm morning, followed by coffee stop at Vanstone. And as to our new Club Champion: Some say that he drinks 13-pints of Ale the night before a race, and that some of his clothes are made from old newspapers. All we know is: he's called Johnnie Hall!

A special mention for Jonathan Schubert on a National Standard worthy 2:11.

This was the last Seabird event of this season, and it’s been a record year for riders participating, with plenty of new riders, and personal best times being set - and through the field there have been a number of close points battles. Final top three placing’s are:

Ladies:

Shu Pillinger 228
Stephanie Wheatley 225
Christine Pout 216

Men:

Gavin Bench 230
Richard Marriott 209
Nick Coe 201

Well done to all riders this year, and big thanks to all those who have helped with marshalling and timekeeping – let’s look forward to a great season in 2012. Results Seabird standings

19-Sep-2011: From Nick Coe: 13 VCC riders rode the Norland Combine 25 TT on Sunday, in chilly conditions. Some very good times posted, including a sub hour from Steve Maxted in his first 25, and improvements from a number of other riders. Christine Pout was first Lady, and 3rd overall on handicap.

This result also confirms Richard Marriott in second Seabird position, and puts Gavin Bench in lead position for Jubilee Cup (fastest 25), and Steve Maxted for Evans Cup (novice 25). Results Seabird standings

18-Sep-2011: Some pics just in from Richard Marriott from my MTB ride last week across the North Downs. Article

3-Sep-2011: From Nick Coe: A dry and warm morning was enjoyed by a strong turnout for the last 10 of the season, this time on the Whitwell circuit. After a very close battle, Shu Pillinger has claimed the ladies Seabird Trophy (Gavin Bench had already won the mens), whilst the Stokes Trophy (best aggregate 6 evening 10s on Standard) also goes to Gavin (Stephanie Wheatley was the fastest Lady). Congratulations to all three. Results Seabird standings

Well done to all riders in this record year, especially those who have stuck at it all season, enjoying some light competition and improving their performance. Also a big thanks again to all marshals and helpers, we could not do this without them.

The Seabird championship for the season will be rounded off with the Norland 25 on 18th September, and the Hill Climb on 2nd October, although these will not change the overall winners

3-Sep-2011: The tandem is dead (RIP). Suzannah and I tried to follow our Rideway Trail ride up with the South Downs Way epic this weekend. Unfortunately it all ended in tears on a 30mph gritty descent. Report

29-Aug-2011: Suzannah Driscoll and I rode the full length of The Ridgeway Trail yesterday (87m off-road) - on my MTB tandem. Started at sunrise and finished just after sunset 14-hours later. A stroll in the park? Find out here

21-Aug-2011: Young Frazer Harper made a successful debut to Track Racing at Welwyn Velodrome with a fine win in the 10-lap scratch - on a £3 hire bike. Keep it up Frazer ... still another 12 months till the Olympics!

20-Aug-2011: 9 of us headed off around Bramfield this morning on my MTB ride. A lovely morning and not too many stinging nettles. Pic below of Jim, Suzannah & Hazel riding up from the Welwyn Viaduct. Shame I wasn't ready to snap Justin as he blasted through the Ford nr Codicote at around 30mph though!

17-Aug-2011: Results from the Bedford Road CC - Charity 25m TT on the F1B/25 at the weekend: Graham Pepperdine: 01:02:29; Shusanah Pillinger: 01:05:35 (4th Lady); James O'Neill: 01:11:12

15-Aug-2011: The VCC TT bretheren were out celebrating the end-of-season last week. Photo courtesy of Shusanah Pillinger

3-Aug-2011: Some fun photos from Tuesday's final Evening 10 - courtesy of Andrew Rice. The regulars were clearly getting demob happy judging from the general jollity, although the Mann father and son marshalling duo seemed rather apprehensive about their duties...

2-Aug-2011: Evening 10: Perhaps fitting that our last Evening 10 of the season should be in rare perfect conditions, with a number of personal best times being set. The Ladies championship still remains very tight for the remaining events of the year. We are also suggesting a pub social for the TT riders and helpers next Tuesday evening. Results Seabird standings

28-Jul-2011: Latest news from Stephanie Wheatley: Unfortunately the BC regional Championships got cancelled due to the lack of entries. The organisers decided they couldnt run the event with only 6 entries. However, on a more positive front: I did the 70.3 Ironman Antwerp at the weekend. I finished in 5.55 (thats 5 hours and 55 minutes). A PB by 13 minutes and came 10th which is even better :)

26-July-2011: Evening 10: Well done to Gavin who has secured first place in the Mens Championship. Lots still to play for in ladies, and other placings. Results Seabird standings

24-Jul-2011: VCC Open 25 Time Trial: A successful event with a full field of 120 riders. Eleven VCC members completed the course in somewhat tricky winds, including some first timers. Well done to all, and a big thanks to the number of helpers and marshals, without whom we could not have run such a prestige event.

Times of VCC riders:

Gavin Bench 00:57:49
Ian Brazier 00:58:50
Mike Jubb
00:59:03
Richard Marriott 01:01:10

Christine Pout 01:12:45

19-July-2011: Evening 10: A wet evening but everybody managed to avoid the heavy showers. Results Seabird standings

18-Jul-2011: I (Doug) took a trip up North on Saturday to ride the Velo 29 Endeavour Sportive around the North Yorshire Moors. A real brutal circuit which wasn't helped by heavy rain and strong winds from start to finish. This is the 3rd Sportive I've reported on this year in which I have finished like a drowned rat! What happened to the summer :(

p.s. I was up at 03:00am on Sunday to drive down from Stockton to meet up with Don Andrews for marshalling duties near St Neots. A lovely morning spent standing on a cold & windy roundabout for 2.5hrs! I heard that Don rode the Raid Pyrenees a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully we'll have a short report and some photos soon

15-July-2011: Several VCC riders made the journey down to the Alps last week for the daddy Sportive of them all: La Marmotte. See a brief report & photos courtesy of Andrew Rice

12-July-2011: Evening 10: Another good turnout in blustery conditions. Gavin Bench takes over the lead of Mens Seabird, having only dropped one point from a perfect score so far.  Competition for other top places is still close with a number of riders now on countback of best 10 rides.

The Ladies competition is still headed by Hazel Davies, but with close times and rides in hand, the competition is still wide open. Results Seabird standings

7-July-2011: 14 riders (12 VCC) headed off to the Alps at the end of June for their annual pilgrimage across the mountains - dubbed this year as Raid Switzerland. Report Photos

5-July-2011: Evening 10: Another tricky night weather wise, but riders were lucky to find a gap in the heavy rain of the day. Nick Coe is the new leader the mens Seabird points race, although others will soon catch up with riders having to drop points after 10 events. We are hoping that Steve Kay's back improves soon to enable a resumption of the close battle with Gavin Bench for top spot, and also that Paul Williams recovers quickly after feeling unwell last night.. Results Seabird standings

4-July-2011: Christine Pout completed the Ironman France last weekend. For those not familiar with the Ironman, this is 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run. 14hrs 48mins, 35C heat, 2,700 competitors. Chapeau Christine! Full report

3-July-2011: Good to see all of our testers coming in 'under the hour' at the Icknield 25: Graham Pepperdine: 58:48, Matt Reader: 58:54, Ian Brazier: 59:07

2-July-2011: Good conditions led to some top times from our 2nd claim members Ross & Luke Clarke. Ross clocking a super 50:01 in the Belper BC 25 and Luke a 19:48 at the Whitewebbs 10. Roger Porter also showed he isn't past it just yet with a cool 21:58 and Graham Pepperdine a 23:05.

1-July-2011: Stephanie Wheatley will be flying the flag for VCC at the British Cycling Womens Regional Road Road Championships on 17th July 2011, and at the 70.3 Ironman Antwerp on 24th July. Good luck Stephanie!

28-Jun-2011: Evening 10: Apologies for the delayed results - again. Have been away on business in sunny (not) Belgrade this time. Our first wet ride of the season, but still a reasonable turnout. Results Seabird standings

26-Jun-2011: A beautiful sunny day graced the VCC Ride4aReason event on Sunday. Congratulations to Dave Yorke for the super organisation and fantastic choices of routes. Some photos available courtesy of Andrew Rice

26-Jun-2011: Many congratulations go to Shu Pillinger having just completed the Deloitte Ride Across Britain, John O'Groats to Land's End, 958 miles over 9 days, crossing the line in 69h 05m 22s. Shu reported: Although it wasn't a race - try telling that to some very competitive people - I was placed 3rd woman, 38th overall, out of over 600 participants. 1st was Sarah Storey, Olympic gold medalist in individual pursuit and road time trial.

I was raising money for ParalympicsGB (many of the cycle team were riding with us) and a small charity called Magic Breakfast, so if any club members would like to, any donations are welcome on my fundraising site -> http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Shu-JoGLE

I'll be missing from the TT again this week - a small matter of recovery required!

21-Jun-2011: Evening 10: Apologies for the delayed results. Have been away in the Alps with a bunch of VCC riders - hence the reduced turn out this week. Results Seabird standings

14-Jun-2011: Evening 10: Some very close times last night and some PBs despite a difficult wind on the return leg. Both the mens and ladies champs are looking to be hard fought. Pic right of Richard Marriot in action. Please see important notice from the organiser on the Bulletin Board. Note that I will be away for the next 2 weeks hence there will be a delay until the next results are published. Results Seabird standings Photos (courtesy of Mike Moore)

12-Jun-2011: Report from Richard Marriot: The Verulam CC 50 trio of Steve Kay, Richard Marriott and Graham Pepperdine were in action again in the Finsbury Park 50 on the F1/50. Steve Kay came in quickest at 2:02:27, Richard Marriott clocked 2:03:22 (a personal best) and Graham Pepperdine came in at 2:09:19, also a personal best. Conditions for early starters were good, with very little wind but, as is often the case, later starters were blessed with a brisk southwesterly breeze. I didn't stay for all the results but when I left Ian Cammish, the Time Lord, was winning with a time of 1:44:56. I don't expect him to have been beaten (doesn't he get bored with winning?)

Doug Driscoll

9-Jun-2011: Chiltern 100: A quick thanks to all that came out to help on yet another epic day of riding. Congratulations to Eddie Spriggs on running one of the best Sportives in the UK - despite it being a non-profit event.  I've collated the VCC rider times here. Steve Kay deserves a special mention for an impressive 4th best time - just 3 mins off of the fastest time of the day! Pic here of me racing to the front when I saw the camera man :) Have you downloaded your photos? If so, do please pass them on for the website

7-Jun-2011: Evening 10: Some close times in tricky conditions. Note; could riders please take extra care when turning at the roundabout, traffic does not expect a U turn. Results Seabird standings

Steve Kay

31-May-2011: Evening 10: Another record turnout last night in blustery conditions. Some distracting hedge cutting at the start point. Some good times posted again with some closely fought places. Results Seabird standings Photos (courtesy of Mike Moore)

24-May-2011: Evening 10: Another record attendance last night (27 riders) with some very close times, good times from newer riders and improved times for others. Results

Gavin Bench & Matt Pumo

22-May-2011: A great day was had by all at our Circuit Racing adventure at Hog Hill. 23 riders took part on a blustery day that made for some tough racing. Steve Kay took most of the spoils in the A category whilst Richard Marriot & Nick Coe shared the honours in the B category. Will Laughton held off all challengers for a close win in the Handicap race. A quick thanks to all those that came out to help on the day and to Dave Korson for bringing the event together. Results Photos (courtesy of Andy Rice)

21-May-2011: Richard Marriott clocked a personal best of 59:48 on the ECCA 25 on the E2/25

17-May-2011: Another record entry for last nights Evening 10. 27 riders and a close battle for the top 5 spots. Some improved times for new riders also. The Seabird competition looks like being very hard fought this season, both for the mens as well as ladies. Results

15-May-2011: Paul Cackett took 3rd place in his category at the MSTINA series RR and is now sitting in joint 2nd overall in the league.

15-May-2011: Steve Kay came top of the Verulam CC trio competing in the Norlond Combine 50m TT on the F1/50 course on the 15th of May. On a blustery day which made bike handling difficult, Steve Kay clocked 2:02:01 (31st), Richard Marriott clocked 2:06:27 (42nd) and Graham Pepperdine clocked 2:12:10 (48th). There were 65 finishers. The perennial Ian Cammish (nick named the 'Time Lord' on some internet fora) won the event in 1:45:23

Team Clarke were also in action with 4th & 5th places from Luke & Ross (1:51:26 & 1:51:48) and 11th for Steve in 1:56:24.

Doug & Hazel

15-May-2011: Andrew Rice, Hazel Davies, Adrian Chamberlain & I had a tough day oop North in the Etape du Dales. 108-miles of which 100-miles seemed to be into a brutal headwind + freezing rain. You have to love the Dales! The feeds were packed with people shivering away and we saw many "soft Northerners" calling it a day. 9hrs 43mins of that for myself & Hazel and 8hrs 22mins for Adrian surely qualifies us for an "ard as nails" award. Fantastic scenery (what we could see of it) and a superbly organized event.

Gavin Bench

10-May-2011: Second Evening 10 TT of the season produced a record entry of 25 riders with a new course record by Luke Clarke of 21:55 and close times for the next few places. Riders are reminded to keep the road clear at the start point, and to arrive in good time for the start. Results Photos (courtesy of Roger Porter)

9-May-2011: May Flyer & Chiltern Big Dipper Sportive report from Steve Kay: I did this sportive as it is only 1hr drive away and good route, lots of leafy lanes and up and downs. When everyone else was at the White Horse I was getting lost 3 times on the Chiltern big dipper thanks to signs going missing one motorist caught in the act and carrying my bike through hedges due to an audi and horse trailer getting stuck in a narrow lane I was in no mood for getting lost again so bought a Garmin. I did not get lost on the May Flyer and got back first in a time of 4:50:28 fastest time no one else cracked the 5hrs. Good sportive but shambolic start and after a gloomy start lovely day. 94 hilly miles with two feed stations on route.

New joiner Shu Pillinger also went dipping: I was the 4th woman (not such a great time, 06:36:53, after getting lost for all the same reasons Steve mentioned!). I managed a quicker time in the Wiggle Ups and Downs Epic Sportive (1st May) but had 2 punctures on potholed Surrey roads... hopefully the roads will be improved in time for the Olympics!

Doug Driscoll

8-May-2011: Sam Skuce and I (Doug) made the long journey up to the Lake District this weekend for the classic Fred Whitton Sportive. Absolutely horrid conditions (hailstones, gale force winds and a good 2 hours of solid downpour) - but this somehow added to the challenge :) Without question the top UK sportive (after Eddie's of course). In fact, I can't think of any sportive in the world that can match the severity of those climbs (33% on Hardnott - after 100 miles). Tempted?? You can see how much I enjoyed it ...

7-May-2011: Roger Porter clocked in a season's best 57:12 in the Newmarket VTTA 25 - and on a nice breezy day. Please see here for a report of other results from Roger so far this season

3-May-2011: Last nights first Evening 10 TT of the season was well attended with 21 riders, including a number of first timers putting in decent times, despite the cool and windy weather. The Ladies points were particularly hotly contested, but remember there is a long way to go with 19 qualifying events this season (best of ten). Results

30-Apr-2011: Gavin Bench had a close call in the Saturday Club TT beating Steve Kay by just 2 seconds. How many "if only" thoughts have you had Steve? Results

25-Apr-2011: I (Doug) rode the Cotswold Spring Classic sportive. Highly recommend this one for the beautiful route, challenging climbs and great organisation. And I got an Easter egg in my goody bag! Top that Eddie :)

16-Apr-2011: The VCC MTB squad headed out to Princes Risborough on Saturday for the Trailbreak Enduro event. Congratulations to Frazer Harper for blasting around the 40k circuit in the fastest time - and on a singlespeed! This was despite us all keeping quiet when he went straight ahead at the first left turn thus gaining us a 10mins head start :)

10-Oct-2010: Club Hill Climb Championship (nr Preston)

18-Dec-2012: A great time was had by all (40?) at the club Christmas Party last night. Dave & Val Korson laid on a fantastic spread - well in keeping with the needs of greedy cyclists :) There was also some serious competition going on in the "musical hats" games - with vintage bottles of wines from Dave's personal cellar at stake. Many thanks to Dave & Val

17-Dec-2012: 4 of us (including myself) had a little tumble on the club run yesterday whilst riding up to Gaddesden Row. Black ice ... and it was at least 7C! I'm pleased to report however that none of our bikes were damaged ;)

12-Dec-2012: Rachel McKay gave a great presentation on Mechanics at the clubroom on Monday. A much needed education on how to mend a puncture - amongst other things. Mike Graves and Sam Skuce had a close run in the pucture mending competition: Sam was first over the line in a super 1' 24" ... but foul play was being called when Mike's tyre appeared to have a better pressure. The matter will be taken up at the next committee meeting ...

4-Dec-2012: Many thanks to Shu Pillinger for an entertaining account of her unsupported London 2 Paris ride and 24-hour Goodwood event last night. Congratulations on qualifying for Ride Across America (RAAM) and good luck with your Double (!?) IronMan (Swim: 4.8 miles | Bike: 224 miles | Run: 52 miles) and Race Around Ireland. I'll look forward to reading all about them with my feet up in front of the fire :)

1-Dec-2012: A great time was had by all at the 85th Annual Dinner & Dance. Super grub and good to see so many up on the dance floor! Many thanks to David Korson for yet another superbly organized evening. p.s. loved the dress Ellie!

16-Nov-2012: We had 8 people show up for the pub night yesterday. Not a great turnout out given that we have over 270 members :( Should we try something different? All suggestion to Doug please

12-Nov-2012: We had a great presentation from Nick Siddall this evening on his Ride across the Himalayas. 45 people in the audience. Guess we're going to need a bigger club room soon! Photos...

8-Nov-2012: Many thanks to Dave & Caroline Kirkham for a great presentation on Monday. Have Wok Will Cycle - Cockham to Istanbul. Let the house out for 6 months, pack your panniers and ride off into the sunset. I'm not too sure my wife will buy into the idea though!

3-Nov-2012: We had 12 riders out on my MTB ride this morning. Some nice deep puddles but all very rideable. We couldn't get into Emily's Cafe at the end though. That dastardly North Road CC lot beat us in there :(
