From David Boorman (Fundraising Director for Access Sport)
I just wanted to get in touch to tell you about Ride Around London, the cycle ride that raises money for grass-roots sport in disadvantaged inner city areas. You probably get lots of requests for support from organisers of sportives, but this is no ordinary cycling event as all the money raised goes back into the community, helping kids get better access to sports like cycling. In 2011, we raised over £25,000 from Ride Around London, which helped us to fund our ground breaking BMX Legacy Project.
How can I help? I hear you say. Or, more importantly, Why should I help?
Ride Around London has two aims: To get more people out on their bikes to see the great cycling London has to offer, and to raise money to help Access Sport transform the lives of young people in the areas that need it most. We feel really strongly that cycling can be used as a fantastic tool for social and community development. Whether you like to ride for health, transport, leisure or sport, you know the benefits reach beyond your club to the whole community. But don’t just take our word for it, how about some stories from some of the clubs we’ve supported over the years…
CC Hackney is a fantastic inner city cycling club. Not only are they working in one of the toughest communities in London with kids who hope to be the next Bradley Wiggins or Mark Cavendish, they also support great cycling projects in the developing world like Cycling Uganda. We are proud to have worked with them and they are a real credit to the community and the sport.
Tower Hamlets CC work in one of the most ethnically diverse boroughs in the UK, and their focus on community cycling has led to them winning awards from the Tower Hamlets Council and the GLA. Their club genuinely cuts through social and ethnic boundaries to provide an inclusive cycling experience.
ELBO BMX, part of our BMX Legacy Project has worked to tirelessly to get a new track in a disused section of a playing field in East London, and is now offering outreach sessions to local kids. Not only that, but if click the link you’ll see one of their coaches jumping over the Mayor of London! Fantastic publicity for a growing sport.
So if you want to help support community sports clubs in disadvantaged areas, there’s lots of ways you can help.
We’re offering two free places in Ride Around London for any club that helps us in any of these ways:
- Promote the event to your members and the wider cycling community (anything from emails, tweets, flyers or facebook would be great)
- Support some of the less experienced riders or kids taking part on the day so that they have a great time
- Provide detailed constructive feedback on the quality of the ride (your expert opinion will help us to make the ride even better year on year)
I’ll be sending out flyers shortly to give you a bit more information. But if you need anything in the meantime, check out www.accesssport.org.uk/ride-around-londonor feel free to email or call.
Thanks for your time
