Race report

Jonathon Schubert punctured in St Pauls Walden and rode with a flat tyre running uphills as he couldn’t keep control of the bike. He ran through the finishing line at the end of lap 1 and got a new front wheel out of his car and in place and then rode off to win the event.

Tim Gray, Matt Pumo, and Malcolm Jenkins did similar performances as last year, whilst Sam Skuce improved 7 minutes on last year in 1:20:58.

Steve Kay, Nick Coe, and Gavin Bench did creditable first time performances

The Hard Riders...
Verulam's Spring Classic

27 miles and 3 laps of the Whitwell, a nominal 10 mile circuit that crosses a variable terrain. Starting with a lead out to the fast rolling section that follows the main Codicote to Hitchin road, it takes a sharp left at 4.5 miles out and makes the punishing climb up to St Paul's Walden where it descends at speed to Whitwell. Turning left at the Whitwell 'T' junction it follows the valley bottom back towards Codicote, punching up 2 short climbs with a sharp descent in between it crosses the start/finish line at the brow of the hill just before the Codicote Hitchin main road. 3 circuits in often variable spring weather makes for a demanding season opener.
